New Videos

Posted by: evasweeney on: July 3, 2010

We’ve got two little videos straight from Julia’s iPhone. In this first video, we see Eva flapping her arms. She’s been doing this a lot lately. I don’t now that it is special, but she has made a habit of it.

Video number two showcases something a bit more interesting. Eva Marie has a new trick. When you ask her to clap her hands, she responds in kind- by clapping those tiny arms together. It’s as if she understands you.

At first I thought it was a trick- a deception of some kind, but it wasn’t. She wasn’t copying or mimic-ing anything or anyone. Eva simply was told, “Eva Marie, clap.” She was doing as she was commanded to- she’s very obedient to her parents.

So what am I to think? What do I take away from this event? It’s probably that she understands- and that she is learning. Learning like those terrible dinosaurs of Jurassic Park- but she’s more adorable.

Eva Marie went swimming

As many of you know, the scorching summer heat can be miserable, but if you take the time to cool off the old fashioned way- it can be quite enjoyable. While this certainly hasn’t been the first pool visit for Eva Marie, it was a cute one.

Eva and Daddy getting ready to swim

Eva in the pool with a mysterious floating donut device that grants the wearer the ability to float harmlessly above this strange water substance.

A cute splashy bun.

Eva working on her backstroke (i.e. kicking)

Julia and Eva hanging in the pool. There was a hunky one and a half year old boy checking the chicks out.

Out of the pool and toweling off. All good things come to an end.

Continuing where we left off yesterday with some new pictures of Eva’s Baptism from Grandma’s camera. Enjoy…

Eva can’t wait for the holy water.

Here’s the group ready for action- (Left to Right) Father Steven Bell, Erica, Kyle, Kirk, Julia, and little Eva Marie.

It’s done- holy bun!!!!

Celebrate good times- come on!!!

A contemplative Eva Marie ponders the magnitude of the occasion (and is sleepy).

A quick obligatory shot of the family ( I mean you always take a picture of the group at any event. What’s the deal with that? I suppose it’s better than taking attendance)

Baptism

Posted by: evasweeney on: May 16, 2010

Eva was baptized today at St. Austin’s Catholic Church, and the Sweeney clan came out in full force. Thanks all for supporting Eva on this big day. In attendance were Grandma, Grandpa, Godfather/Uncle Kirk, Aunt Heather, Cousins Sara and Shawn, God-mom Erica Russell with Sir Alisdair McKivben, published author and comedienne Emma Holder, and local videophile Andy Petruzzo. We wanted to throw a couple of pictures up from the event. So here it goes- with witty captions written by yours truly (Kyle).

Dad and Eva on the steps of the altar after all the blessing had gone down.

Eva being baptized at St. Austin’s and loving every minute of it.

Uncle Kirk (always trying to start up some trouble) gave Eva the box to the official baptism candle.

The always lively master of ceremony, Father Steven Bell, telling Julia that Eva Marie was the best baptismee (or person being baptized).

First Word!

Posted by: evasweeney on: April 9, 2010

On the morning of April 9, 2010 at approximately 8:57:32, Eva Marie Sweeney entered the ranks of the verbal. Up to this point, we had certainly received our fair share of babbles from the young orator: “glabababa”,  “alllalalalalala”, “phhhffft” (with and without bubbles). But never before had sounds exited her mouth which could in good faith be construed by the adult ear as a stand-alone word. Distinct from the fourth-attempt victory of her famous first sit, Eva said her word most distinctly and convincingly on the undocumented first try. But as soon as she said it we grabbed the iPhone and started recording, and what followed was recorded for posterity right here:

Eva’s First Easter!!!

Posted by: evasweeney on: April 8, 2010

We wanted to get a quick post with five pictures (of our 362 pooled album) from our Dallas/Easter adventure.

Eva Marie really didn’t know what to make of the egg hunt. Shawn was the only really active participant- leaving Saraphina and Eva to sit on the grass and absorb some Vitamin D.

The cousins were set up for more than a few group photos- each more adorable than the last. The picture was taken courtesy of Chris’ iPhone. It best encapsulates the group more so than any other picture taken this weekend.

The girls (as always) played well together. This pairing of Father/Daughter chicken was too much to pass up.

The shot contains Eva Marie in her Sunday’s Best. Naturally, the photo party continued after church and continued into the afternoon.

All and all a pretty far out weekend for our little Eva Marie. More pictures to come….

Springtime, Swing Time

Posted by: evasweeney on: April 1, 2010

With the beautiful weather we have been having this week, Eva Marie decided she’d had quite enough of the apartment and wanted to take a walk out to our beloved swing overlooking the hills of West Austin.

We had a wonderful time swinging gently on the windy hill. Eva played some SuperBaby, extra-fun style thanks to the added swinging motion.

In classic Eva Marie fashion, she spent a good bit of time sitting back, relaxing, and nomming on her hand. As evidenced from the look of anxious anticipation on her face, her hand here was mere milliseconds from being captured by her mouth.

In the name of muscle development, babies are supposed to spend some time each day playing on their stomachs (“Tummy Time”). Eva Marie does not enjoy this one bit, and I can’t really blame her – being plopped face first onto a brightly colored play mat and lying pinned there by the weight of my own disproportionately large skull does not sound like much fun at all!  However, the beautiful view (and use of Mom as a play mat) allowed Eva Marie to become distracted enough to do some serious baby pushups.

Go girl, go!

Baby Einstein Indeed

Posted by: evasweeney on: March 31, 2010

Okay, okay, everyone thinks their kid’s smart. And beautiful. And oh so special. Well we’re no different. Check this out:

So Eva Marie loves to hang out in this little Baby Einstein exersaucer thing, a generous loan from Kyle’s big sister Danielle. It is endlessly entertaining to her, with bright colors and a wealth of varying shapes and textures to experience…

…the all-important “something to nom on”…

…and the feature singularly most exciting to young Eva Marie: A circular plastic thingy that is divided into 5 sections, each depicting a different animal. When pushed, each section makes the sound of its pictured animal, then upon successive pushes says the animal’s name in English then Spanish, and finally will play a song.

Upon encountering this part of the toy, Eva Marie explored it like any baby would explore an interesting item that they could not fit into their mouth – by wildly swatting at it with her little baby arms. Every dozen or so swats, in between lion noises and duck noises and halfhearted renditions of Spanish nouns, “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” would play, (and Mom would sing along) and Eva would become ferociously excited. This would be replaced with extreme frustration if she hit another button and stopped the song, or wasn’t able to get it to play again.

What’s the big deal, you ask? Well: In about 20 minutes, Eva Marie figured out that if she hit the purple cow button, and only the purple cow button, four times in a row, the song would play. She repeated the pattern to her endless amusement until at least ten variations of the song had been performed by Mom, including a valiant attempt at Maria Bamford’s critically acclaimed “Old MacDonald Had a Pterodactyl”, and it was time to take a nap. Clever girl!

Eva, Sitting Bull

Posted by: evasweeney on: March 30, 2010

The day started like any other playing in the baby room on the ole Futon. She was positioned to play with the handsomely named “Kyle the Crocodile” (a Christmas gift from Aunt Shirley and Uncle Ev) that, while much loved, to this point had only been played with as an over-sized teething toy.

Today “Kyle the Crocodile” gave Eva Marie a little core and balance training before the big event- Eva Marie sitting (no hands) for extended periods for the first time.

I believe she chose today to showcase some of her new found physical talents because she was dressed for success. Julia had adorned the Bun with an unforgettable outfit from Eva’s Spring 2010 line featuring vibrant colors, the layered-look, and distinct patterns.

Her first attempts were admirable. A series of moments passed before an unexpected gust of air conditioned wind toppled the teetering baby over on an initial great effort.

But that didn’t keep her down long. After a brief reset, Eva Marie provided that the old adage was true- practice makes perfect. Sits #2 and #3 were longer than the first. You could tell she was really getting the hang of it.

But it was Sit#4 that really turned some heads around here. Once set-up on this valiant effort, she sat without assistance, maintaining balance for an Eva Marie World Record of 7 minutes 23 seconds.

At one point, Eva forgot she was sitting and just went about her business as usual- nom-ing on her hand, thinking about her next meal, and deciding which Baby Einstein DVD to watch later that evening. All in all a fantastic day with yet again another of those fun and exciting physical milestones.

Enter the Sippy Cup

Posted by: evasweeney on: March 22, 2010

Eva Marie has been reaching for our glasses, cans, and other drinking devices quite a bit lately- so we figured what a great time to see what she can do solo with her first sippy cup.

At first, she believed the sippy cup to be little more than a large chew toy for her to “nom” on. For a teething baby there is no shortage of items in the apartment that become nom-ed: fingers, toes, stuffed animals, teething rings, sleeves, socks, toys, blankets, books, feet, straps, noses, knuckles, iPhones, iPods, remotes, Playstation controllers, BluRays, cameras, keys, Kyle’s USS Enterprise replica – you get the idea.

Even during normal bottle feeding she’s attempted to become more independent by holding her hands up as if she were holding the bottle herself.

She eventually got the hang of it. We started with water in the cup to practice, but upgraded to milk because she was hungry.

It may be awhile before she’s a drinking pro, but it was good to get a little experience under her baby-sized belt.
